Folk-Art Pottery

*What Is Folk Art, and Is
It Still Made Today?

American folk art is an embracing term that has been used in the United States since the late 19th century. The term "folk art" originated in Europe, where it was used to refer to the household arts and decorative traditions of peasant communities that developed during the Middle Ages.

The history of the term's usage in this country, however, is markedly different. The class- and community-based definition has given way to a more expansive approach to the subject. To be sure, those traditional handmade and embellished materials of daily life that can be utilitarian, decorative, recreational, or ceremonial in nature are included. In these categories, the form and decoration are often determined by factors such as cultural heritage and religion, but are also influenced by shared national experiences, exposure to other cultural byways, changing needs, and images imparted through the mass media.

In the United States, the term "folk art" is also applied to a wide spectrum of artworks by self-taught artists who have come to their art-making in unconventional and personal ways, outside the canons of fine art academies.
